description:
Lawrence Weiner's project for Artranspennine03 is pretty much the same as the project he made for Artranspennine98 - with one crucial difference. The work has been resited from its orignal location in Hull and has moved 97 miles west to a new site in Radcliffe, Bury. In the process the work has been retitled from Hull Horizon to The Horizon is now at the edge of the water. In resiting this work Weiner not only challenges one of the dearly held principles of site specific art but has created a situation in which the artwork itself has become genuinely transpennine. Although not planned at the outset of the project in 1998 this gesture reveals a malleabllity in the material properties of site which Weiner successfully exploits to create a work whose 'personal' history has become central to its meaning.
