description:
Martin Vincent's project involves the use of a mobile pirate radio transmitter
and a recording of a rural idyll. For Artranspennine03 he will be driving up
and down the M62, the motorway which straddles the transpennine region, broadcasting
to the other drivers on the FM band. Although the M62 connects the urban centres
of Hull, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool, for much of its length it cuts
through rural areas in which agriculture is still the central element
of the economy. At one point between Manchester and Leeds the motorway's two
carriageways divide around a farmhouse, still working but engulfed by the tide
of vehicles
Vincent's soundtrack uses farmyard recordings downloaded from internet sources
to manufacture a bucolic world to match up with a driver's-eye view of the surroundings.
It is entirely likely therefore that drivers skipping between various local
radio stations along the route will find their vehicles filled with a sound
that is entirely consistent with what they see around them, although unprecedented
in its appearance within the otherwise hermetic aural environment of a moving
vehicle.
