Diminished Seventh
location:
Transregional
date(s):
23 May - 16 August 2003
description:
For Artranspennine03 Thomson & Craighead have produced a set of five tuned
alpine cowbells. Each bell is hung around the neck of a cow and chimes as the
cow moves around the fields. The diminished seventh which ensues has a characteristicly
rich sound created by a stack of three minor thirds ( it is the diatonic chord
of vii7 in minor keys). Visitors to the transpennine region are advised to listen
out for the diminished seventh which should be audible from within 100 metres
of the cows. Through this work Thomson & Craighead demonstrate how a potentially
infinite variety of generative musical outcomes can be created that respond
directly to the location within which they are installed. Find out more by visiting
